Good news for the software community based on open source. The Linux operating system grew by 23.4% between 2007 and 2008. This trend will continue with increases of 16.9% annually, according to an IDC study.
Confirming the predictions, this type of software for the first time will reach 1,000 million dollars in revenue in 2012, getting 1,200 in 2013. Meanwhile, the Linux operating system subscriptions will be made in 2009, although it is expected that the behavior change by 2013.
In turn, it is expected that implementations of Linux unpaid grow faster than new subscribers until 2013. The combined total server subscriptions to this type of operating system and the deployment of unpaid versions are expected to show a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.1% in the period between 2008-2013, a low figure due to the contraction in 2009.
"The dynamics observed is fascinating. The convergence of the difficult economic situation, the maturing of virtualization software for enterprise and increasing use of replica deployments of Linux server operating systems is leading to a change in market success increasingly defined installed base by more than the number of new subscribers or deployments, "said Al Gillen, vice president of systems software at IDC.
